Researchers at Mayo Clinic have found that the general anesthetic, Ketamine, is very effective at treating depression when administered over a long period.
The study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, revealed that prolonged, low-dose intravenous infusions of Ketamine, have excellent potential in reducing the symptoms of severe depression.
About ten years ago researchers identified that Ketamine has properties that can help alleviate depression. However, given the serious psychiatric side effects of the drug, experts have been looking for the safest ways to use it.
Co-author Timothy Lineberry, M.D., a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist, said:
“It’s surprising both that it works and how rapidly it has effects. It sometimes can work in hours to reduce depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Our goal is to begin to determine how the drug can be administered safely in routine treatment.”
A total of 10 patients with either a major depressive disorder or type of bipolar disorder were included in the study. All of the participants failed to respond to anti-depressant medications.
The patients were all treated with low-dose ketamine infusions (0.5 mg/kg total dose), up to twice a week, until their symptoms of depression went away.
Ketamine proved to be very effective at helping the patients recover. In addition, the authors found that ketamine infusions at low rates worked just as well as higher infusion rates.
Patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) typically have widespread chronic pain and fatigue. For those with low vitamin D levels, vitamin D supplements can reduce pain and may be a cost-effective alternative or adjunct to other treatment, say researchers in the current issue of PAIN®.
In addition to pain and fatigue, individuals diagnosed with FMS may experience sleep disorders, morning stiffness, poor concentration, and occasionally mild-to-severe mental symptoms such as anxiety or depression. The condition can have a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life, resulting in loss of employment and/or withdrawal from social life. There is no cure, and no treatment will address all of the symptoms, but some symptoms may be alleviated by physical therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, temporary drug therapy (such as amitriptyline, duloxetine, or pregabaline) and multimodal therapies. Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have discovered a new immune protein influencing autoimmune diseases such as lupus and multiple sclerosis. The researchers behind the new study think a new mutation of an immune protein called an “Fc receptor” may help scientists develop more personalized autoimmune disease treatments. Read More
A vaccine for Lyme disease may be on its way, following a promising phase 1/2 clinical trial from investigators at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The finding was published online in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, and revealed that the vaccine resulted in significant antibodies against all targeted species of Borrelia – the agent that causes Lyme disease in the United States and Europe. Read More
Lyme disease in the US is ’10-times underreported’
The number of Lyme disease cases diagnosed in the US every year is around 300,000, according to new figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This number is about 10 times higher than the number officially reported.
CDC officials presented their new preliminary estimates in Boston on Sunday at the 2013 International Conference on Lyme Borreliosis and Other Tick-Borne Diseases.
Lyme disease is the most commonly reported tick-borne illness in the US, where every year the CDC receives reports on 30,000 cases. The disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of ticks infected with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Read More
A new study claims to have ruled out a link between childhood vaccination against varicella (chickenpox) and the increased incidence of herpes zoster (shingles) in adults, according to an article published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Chickenpox and shingles are both caused by the same virus – the varicella zoster virus (VZV). The first exposure to the virus can lead to varicella or chickenpox, which is a common and fairly mild illness. Predominantly a childhood illness, adults can also get it.
Although exposure to the virus or the vaccine means the body will develop antibodies to the infection, which offer immunity from catching it again, the varicella virus has a sting in its tail. This virus remains dormant (inactive) in the body’s nerve tissues and can return later in life as shingles. Read More
Scientists have made a breakthrough in regenerative medicine by fully restoring a degenerated organ in a living animal for the first time.
A team from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre for Regenerative Medicine, at the University of Edinburgh in the UK, reconstructed the thymus of aging mice. They report their findings in the journal Development.
The thymus is a glandular structure that functions as part of the body’s immune system by creating T cells – the type of white blood cell that is essential for fighting infection. Located in the front of the heart, the thymus is the first organ to deteriorate as we age.
Medical News Today recently wrote a spotlight feature focusing on symptoms and treatments for the condition to coincide with National Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month in March.
In that feature, Arney Rosenblat, associate vice president of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, told us that though there are currently 10 disease-modifying therapies approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for MS, “there is deep unmet need for additional therapies, especially to treat progressive forms of disease for which there are few treatment options.”
Marijuana treatment eases spasticity and pain
Researchers from the current study, led by Dr. Vijayshree Yadav of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, focused on what impacts certain CAM therapies have on MS, including oral cannabis, medical marijuana pills, oral medical marijuana spray, ginkgo biloba, magnetic therapy, bee sting therapy, omega-3 fatty acids and reflexology.
Medical marijuana taken in pill or oral spray form may ease symptoms of spasticity, pain and frequent urination in patients with MS, according to the new guideline.
Regarding prevalence of CAM therapy use, Dr. Yadav says:
“Using different CAM therapies is common in 33-80% of people with MS, particularly those who are female, have higher education levels and report poorer health. People with MS should let their doctors know what types of these therapies they are taking, or thinking about taking.”
The researchers note that for most of these CAM therapies, safety is not known, as there is not enough information to show whether they interact with prescription drugs for MS.
However, while the latest guidelines show little evidence most CAM therapies can treat symptoms, medical marijuana pills and oral medical marijuana spray may alleviate symptoms of spasticity, pain and frequent urination in MS patients.
But before patients with the condition rush to medical marijuana dispensaries, the researchers say there is not enough evidence to show whether actually smoking marijuana helps treat symptoms.
Additionally, this therapy may not reduce tremor, and the team cautions that long-term safety of using medical marijuana in pill or oral spray form is unknown.
Side effects of marijuana treatment ‘should be considered’
As with most treatments or therapies, the researchers say marijuana in a pill or spray could cause certain side effects. The more serious ones include seizures, dizziness, thinking and memory problems, and psychological problems, such as depression.
Fast facts about MS
Most people experience first MS symptoms between the ages of 20 and 40.
Initial symptoms are often blurred or double vision, red-green color distortion or blindness in one eye.
Most MS patients have muscle weakness and difficulty with balance and coordination.
The last side effect raises concerns, as some people with MS have an increased risk for depression or suicide. As such, the team says both patients and doctors should consider the possible side effects that marijuana treatment can carry with it.
Other CAM therapies that showed some promise were ginkgo biloba – which might help reduce tiredness but not thinking or memory problems – and magnetic therapy – which may reduce tiredness but not depression.
Reflexology may ease tingling, numbness and other skin sensations, while bee sting therapy and a low-fat diet with fish oil do not appear to help MS symptoms of disability, depression or tiredness. Plus, the team cautions that bee stings can cause life-threatening allergic reactions.
When they investigated benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, the researchers found they do not reduce relapses, disability, tiredness or MRI brain scan lesions, and they conclude that they do not improve overall quality of life in MS patients.
In 2013, Medical News Today reported on a study that suggested chemical compounds in marijuana can help treat MS-like diseases in mice by preventing inflammation in the brain and spinal cord.

Terminal deletion of the long arm of chromosome 4, (4q) is a rare event. It is characterized by spectral phenotypic manifestations, depending upon the site and quantity of chromatin lost. The chromosomal loss which span 4 (q31-q35) segment often manifests as craniofacial anomalies, mental retardation with ocular, cardiac, genitourinary defects and pelvic/limb dysmorphism. These abnormalities are usually unilateral. We report a female child (46, XX), aged 11 months, born to nonconsanguineous parents, bearing chromosomal deletion of 4 (q31.2-35.2) segment, which has manifested as craniofacial hypoplasia of left side of face, ipsilateral ptosis, erythroderma and bilateral thumb anomalies. Prevention and reversal of severe mitochondrial cardiomyopathy by gene therapy in a mouse model of Friedreich’s ataxia
Cardiac failure is the most common cause of mortality in Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA), a mitochondrial disease characterized by neurodegeneration, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and diabetes1, 2, 3. FRDA is caused by reduced levels of frataxin (FXN), an essential mitochondrial protein involved in the biosynthesis of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Impaired mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, bioenergetics imbalance, deficit of Fe-S cluster enzymes and mitochondrial iron overload occur in the myocardium of individuals with FRDA9, 10, 11, 12. No treatment exists as yet for FRDA cardiomyopathy13, 14. A conditional mouse model with complete frataxin deletion in cardiac and skeletal muscle (Mck-Cre-FxnL3/L– mice) recapitulates most features of FRDA cardiomyopathy, albeit with a more rapid and severe course15, 16. Here we show that adeno-associated virus rh10 vector expressing human FXN injected intravenously in these mice fully prevented the onset of cardiac disease. Moreover, later administration of the frataxin-expressing vector, after the onset of heart failure, was able to completely reverse the cardiomyopathy of these mice at the functional, cellular and molecular levels within a few days. Our results demonstrate that cardiomyocytes with severe energy failure and ultrastructure disorganization can be rapidly rescued and remodeled by gene therapy and establish the preclinical proof of concept for the potential of gene therapy in treating FRDA cardiomyopathy.
